Our Mission
JWB creates transnational access to legal assistance for victims of labour exploitation and human trafficking so that they can seek rightful compensation, even after returning home.

Why join us?
“I was touched by the importance and message of JWB: everybody should be able to have a fair shot through the legal and court system…no matter who they are.” – Jonathan Crompton, Board Member and Secretary

  • Your perspective matters—Our small but growing board means every person can contribute meaningfully.
  • Regional outlook—Build experience with exciting strategic questions that cross borders.
  • Unique innovative programmes—Be a part of a governance team advancing an underserved issue.
  • Open, inclusive, and growth focused—Our board is enthusiastic and collegial. We help our members build skills to succeed in this position and in their careers as leaders.

The Board’s Role at JWB
Our board provides strategic governance and mission-based leadership. While day-to-day operations are led by our Executive Director (the ED), the Board-ED relationship is a central partnership. We follow the Complementary Model of Board Governance to guide our collaboration.

What do board members do?
We ask for a 5 hour monthly commitment on average. Our board meetings and activities include:

  • Strategic leadership—Advising the ED as they develop and implement JWB’s strategic plan. Conduct reviews.
  • Reviewing and approving budgets—Helping us set our goals and funding objectives to fuel our work.
  • Board operations—Contribute to policy reviews, policy development and new member recruitment.
  • Expert advice—to the ED and other board members in your area(s) of expertise.
  • Activating your network—on behalf of JWB. This includes fundraising and various in-kind support.
  • Annual evaluations—Of both the ED’s and the Board’s performance. We strive for constructive feedback.

A word about fundraising…
Many funders require a Board fully engaged in fundraising, so we ask all members to make an annual donation that is meaningful for them. They can give directly or help collect donations from others. Our ED and fundraising staff support our board with all fundraising work. If you can help introduce us, our team can help make the ask.

Board terms of service
JWB’s Board Members serve a two-year term and are eligible for re-appointment for up to two additional terms. Regular Board meetings are held regularly (usually monthly) virtually for one hour and any committee meetings will be held in coordination with full Board meetings.
