Migrant Domestic Workers & Exessive Agency Fees: Cross-Border Perspectives from Singapore and Indonesia

Published on: June 8, 2023 Language: English Type: Strategic Legal Research

Singapore is home to a sizable number of migrant domestic workers, mostly from Indonesia and the Philippines. While strict statutory requirements and guidelines are in place to protect these workers, there continue to be cases of unscrupulous and errant agencies overcharging them. Although such exploitative practices are condemned and penalized by the Singapore Government, the issue of agencies overcharging placement fees is still prevalent.

Together with Tan Kok Quan Partnership (TKQP), King & Spalding LLP (Singapore), JWB has launched the Strategic Legal Research Series, ” Migrant Domestic Workers & Exessive Agency Fees: Cross-Border Perspectives from Singapore and Indonesia”. This research includes discussions on the different perspectives that Indonesia and Singapore have on this issue – for example, the different practical concerns that need to be taken into consideration, as well as the different laws and guidelines within each country. To add on, the research also delves deeper into the possible methods of legal recourse that can be taken in each of the two countries.

The research was the product of countless hours of work by pro bono lawyers, law students, and other volunteers. Financial support will ensure that we can continue building access to justice in the long run. Please consider a donation in support of our mission. Every dollar makes a difference.”
